It is well-known that in order to stay healthy; we need our immune system to be functioning properly. And with 90% of our immune system being housed in the gut, that makes our gut health extremely important!
One of the main problems associated with the gut is inflammation and disruption to the gut lining. Most of us are familiar with or have experienced common symptoms of an “upset stomach” including diarrhea, constipation, bloating, cramping and gas. However, there are also symptoms and signs related to our gut that we may not be as familiar with. These, may include:

  • Allergies
  • Arthritis
  • Rashes
  • Acne
  • Eczema
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Candida
  • Heartburn
  • Mood disorders
  • Autism
  • Dementia
  • Cancer

In order to heal the gut we must reduce inflammation, and in doing so we can avoid a long list of diseases and illnesses. This restoration is most easily done by following a three-stage system:

The first stage is to removal of anything that irritates the gut, including:

  • Difficult to digest foods—corn, unfermented soy
  • Caffeine
  • NSAIDs—drugs such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin
  • Alcohol
  • Known or common allergens

The Elimination Diet is a program designed to clear the body of foods and chemicals you may be allergic or sensitive to. The most common allergens to eliminate include:

    • Dairy
    • Gluten
    • Yeast
    • Eggs
    • Corn
    • Soy
    • Peanuts

These foods may be hard for the body to digest or you may be allergic. After eliminating these for 1 month, they can be reintroduced one at a time to see if they cause symptoms. If symptoms occur when reintroduced, you should continue to avoid these foods.
If you are interested in finding out the specific allergens that may be causing you upset or to find out more information on IgE and IgG allergy testing check out our testing page. It is important to note that this should be done before eliminating allergens from your diet to ensure accurate results.

The next phases is to replace healthy foods including prebiotic fiber, probiotics, and enzymes. The following supplements should be taken for at least 2 months.

      • Probiotics
It has become more widely known in recent years that the human gut or gastrointestinal tract is filled with both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria. The relative proportions of both the good and the bad in this mixture known as our gut flora, play a big part in overall health.
The easiest way to re-establish a healthy gut flora is through the use of probiotics which are filled with plenty of the ‘good’ bacteria.
There are three critical factors for an effective probiotic program, these include:

        • sufficient numbers of a small number of relevant species of bacteria
        • must be used on an ongoing basis
        • a good probiotic must be taken with food
      • Recommended Standard Dose:
          • 1 capsule daily with food, minimum 10 billion per capsule
          • HMF Forte from Seroyal available from True Balance

In addition to a probiotic supplements, there are also foods and drinks that are probiotic rich, including:

Repair Now the harmful foods have been removed from the diet and have been replaced with foods that are supportive to the good bacterial colony formation. The final stage of gut restoration is to repair the damage done to the gut lining. This phase of restoration is accomplished by reducing existing inflammation, and providing support for your body’s own repair mechanisms. The following supplements should be taken for at least 2 months.

      • Kombucha
      • Miso
      • Sauerkraut
      • Kimchi
      • Kefir
      • Unsweetened Yogurt Cultures
    • Prebiotics
In order to ensure growth of the ‘good’ bacteria or probiotics in our gut it is essential to provide them with the right food. This can be done in the form of prebiotics. Prebiotics are a form of soluble fiber that essentially acts as fertilizer for the good bacteria in our gut. The introduction of prebiotics is very effective at boosting the numbers of the good bacteria. Prebiotics are present in specific plant foods including asparagus, dandelion greens, yams and leeks

      • Recommended Standard Dose:
          • 10 grams daily with food
      • Note: patients often experience increased gas and bloating when starting prebiotic supplementation although this symptom typically subsides after a few weeks. We highly recommend continuing taking prebiotics, especially if you experience these symptoms as they actually represent a sign of imbalanced gut flora. If the symptoms of gas and bloating do not subside, this is an indicator of candida and you may benefit from our candida diet plan.
    • Digestive Enzymes
Protein absorption is critical for many systems in the body. Adequate hydrochloric acid is required for the proper breakdown of food in the stomach as it is prepared for digestion in the small bowel. After the stomach the pancreas contributes to the production of digestive enzymes releasing them into the upper part of your gut known as the small intestine, these enzymes are required to properly break down the proteins in food for incorporation into the body.
Symptoms of gas and bloating with meals should lead to a trial of digestive enzyme supplementation.

      • Recommended Standard Dose:
        • 1 capsules before meal up to 4 per day
        • AOR zymes available from True Balance
      • A 2-3 month trial will establish proper digestion if these enzymes are present in insufficient quantities. This should lead to a reduction in symptoms of gas, bloating and flatulence following meals.
      • Berberine
Found in plants such as goldenseal and barberry, berberine is a potent antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory. It is not only helpful in controlling yeast in the gut due to its antifungal action but it can also help to balance the good and bad bacteria as well. This action makes berberine a very useful tool in optimizing gut health

        • Recommended Standard Dose
          • 500 mg capsule three times per day
        • It has been found in many cases to be as effective as some pharmaceuticals and because of its potency, it is important to review medications that are being taken in combination with berberine.
      • Omega 3’s
Omegas 3’s are very important in reducing inflammation everywhere in the body, including the gut. They not only prevent further inflammation but combat existing inflammation allow for proper healing of the gut lining

        • Recommended Standard Dose:
          • 1 capsule twice per day with meals
          • Total EPA + DHA equaling 2400 mg per day
        • We recommend and sell only pharmaceutical grade fish oil, because of risks of contamination. This ensures guaranteed potency, and that is dioxin and mercury free according to the International Fish Oil Association. Inexpensive brands meet none of these qualities and are not recommended. There is significant individual response to omega 3 supplementation; one dose is not optimal for everyone. For those interested, advanced testing of the AA/EPA ratio is available at private labs in the USA through True Balance. This ratio will determine if your dose is optimal for you.
      • Zinc Carnosine
Found naturally in Pumpkin seeds, zinc carnosine provides support for digestive enzymes allowing them to properly breakdown food. It is also necessary for proper function of our immune system. These two functions make it a very important element in the proper function of our gut health.

        • Recommended Standard Dose:
          • 75 mg capsule once per day
      • L-Glutamine
Is one of the essential amino acids for human survival, it is found in cabbage, meat and animal products. This powerful amino acid acts as fuel for gut cells, allowing them to repair and rebuild themselves when damaged. It can help heal ulcers, as well as leaky gut by acting as a Band-Aid protecting from further damage

        • Recommended Standard Dose:
          • 5 grams three times per day
