Photo Rejuvenation: IPL

Medical Aesthetics & Laser Spa Serving Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, St. Albert & Nearby Edmonton, Alberta

We all want clear skin, but nature has a way of sabotaging us with frustrating imperfections. Luckily, photofacial technology, which uses lasers and pulsed light to remove these imperfections, has been growing in leaps and bounds.

Photo Rejuvenation – Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments uses a visible light that very effectively improves facial redness and chronic flushing as well as the visible signs of sun damage. Treatments are done on the face, neck, chest, arms, hands and back.

The imperfections the IPL can treat are almost too many to list here, but it can be used specifically for:

  • rosacea
  • facial veins
  • pigmented lesions (sun spots or age spots)
  • acne scars
  • dull complexions

  • increased production of collagen that lifts and tightens the skin
  • improved skin texture
  • return of your skin’s youthful appearance

How does IPL work?

IPL technology is an intense light that is emitted in a series of gentle pulses over the treatment area. Unlike a conventional laser, IPL emits light energy over many wavelengths allowing the light to penetrate to all the levels of the skin where abnormally dilated vessels and irregular pigmentation can be found thereby stimulating collagen regeneration. This, in turn, improves firmness and dexterity of the tissue. Five to six treatments are recommended with rest periods of three weeks in between each session.

Is there any downtime with IPL?

More even-toned, smoother undeniably youthful skin can be yours with little or no down time. In many instances, the patient can return to work the same or next day without the unwanted inquisitive stares of others.

Are there any side effects associated with IPL?

Mild reddening of the treatment area which usually fades by the next day but which may last up to 3 days in some patients. On rare occasions slight bruising and some crusting of the treatment area may occur but typically clears up quickly. If a patient has had a lot of long-term sun exposure they are more prone to swelling after treatment but many feel this is a fair trade-off given the benefits of IPL. In some isolated cases, inconsistency in tissue pigmentation may occur but this is easily treatable.

What is the duration of an IPL procedure?

IPL treatments can last up to an hour. In preparation for the procedure all product must be removed from the treatment area and men are requested to be clean-shaven the day of their procedure. The facial area is prepped with a pre-treatment cream over which the smooth glass surface of the IPL hand-piece will pass. Patients will also be asked to adorn protective glassware. The patient will experience a sting-like snapping sensation that will subside with the post-application of ice or cold packs.
